Many of Evans' most evocative images were made in 1935 - 36, for the US government's Farm Security Administration. This was to be his most seminal work. In 1938 the museum of modern art honored Evans with its first one-man photography exhibition, Walker Evans American Photographs. Over one half of the 100 photographs shown were from the FSA series-recognition that while these images succeeded as clear and dispassionate records, they represented higher value as lyric documents.
